Audience Development

Building social audiences and communities

I am in love with building passionate audiences who are proud to collaborate and connect with journalists, and managing those communities from the ground up. I’ve spent nearly 10 years studying digital subcultures, group formations and actions around news and media.

Most recently I’ve written about communities and anonymity for Medium, Wired and the New York Times.

I began my career in print reader services and grew to love community management through audience building, user generated content and crowdsourcing, including smart sharing tools and creating relationships through engagement.

Previously I managed a community of 4 million users with 250 million comments as Huffington Post’s Senior Community Editor. Then, I enabled moderation standards and practices around feminism, sustainability and politics at Salon.com. Finally, I launched Yahoo’s travel magazine to have one of the highest social referral rates across the portal, and standardized cross-section social partnerships. I focus on user growth and retention, and endemic audience to enhance reporting.

My highlights includes…

– Leading the 500% growth of a website via external referrals.
– Creating content campaigns that have reached 4 million+ users across Twitter, Facebook, newsletters and partnerships.
– Speaking to audiences at New York Women in Communications, Columbia Journalism Weekend, Book Expo America and TBEX.
– Hiring teams that span across moderation, editorial and product development.

I am available for awesome projects and to talk to you about communities.
