As a New York City native, I’ve been going to farmers markets for as long as I can remember. Some of my favorite memories include taking a walk with my grandma and her little red wagon and loading up on fruits and veggies, that she would add to the ones she grew in her Brooklyn garden, for our usual Sunday feast.

Farmers markets definitely took a hit for a few years, remember pesticide watch and the great meat obsession of the turn of the century? But, they seem to be back in a big way while we all return to our roots in these crazy economic times, and get back to basics. Whether you’re a long time resident, or a new visitor looking for a quick, fresh bite, the farmers market is the place to stop.

Below you can find a list of resources to help you plan your trip and a round-up of popular New York City Greenmarkets.

The St. George market on SI has the best empanada’s but yeah Union Square is amazing, too!
