Health While Traveling- A #TNI Giveaway!
A few months ago I went on an infamous quick girls getaway to Paris and Rome and developed horrifying pneumonia while I was there, and carried it for the entire trip. I’m pretty well known for becoming sick on trips, but for me, this was the final straw. Since then I’ve taken every precaution, from extra vaccinations to local food knowledge and preparation, to stay healthy while I’m abroad. When @ChooseCherries contacted me with a few reasons why a simple bag of cherries could help me achieve these goals, I was both pleasantly surprised and motivated.
As we all travel so much, I think it’s really important to try our best to stay healthy both on the road and between jaunts. We expose ourselves to some of the harshest elements, the strangest meals, and the longest, hardest hours people can exert themselves with; we do it voluntarily, and we do it happily. And while we’re doing that, we should also try to keep in mind some simple ways to stay on the up-and-up of our bodies. At the very least so we can live another day to see another place.
Happily, this week I’m hosting another installment of #TNI, the Travelers Night In chats on Twitter. During its tenure, #TNI has attracted the attention of around numerous participants from bloggers to industry folks.
I hosted the Euro cities chat a few months ago, and was thrilled when the opportunity arose for me to not only host again, but offer my friends and colleagues a giveaway at the same time!
This week, on my blog, I’m giving away a @ChooseCherries prize pack to a random commenter who leaves their best on-the-road health tip below. The winner can expect to receive:
- A four lb bag of dried cherries
- A Kashmere red pillow case-socks-shawl travel set
- A Tory Burch Cosmetic Case
- A Cherry Marketing Institute tote bag
I’ll be reading all the great comments this entire week and will pick a winner on Sunday night, to be announced Monday morning.
Plus, another lucky person will win a prize pack this week during a special health centric #TNI. Simply hash your tweets with #RedRecovery during the chat, and one person will be chosen at random to win!
Thanks friends, and good luck. I can’t wait to see your health tips below and I hope we can all make even a small commitment to be kinder to the bodies that do so much for us.

My tip is a simple one: Carry a sweater (or something akin to that) on the plane: it takes up little room, the plane can often get drafty, and even when you’ve been to a warm tropical destination you’ll get chilled on the plane.
I take a lot of nutritional supplements anyway, and about a week before flying I kick up the antioxidants. I use an isotonic mix that is great for traveling because it’s powdered and you just add an ounce of water and take it twice a day. I also love my fluffy socks but my daughters are always stealing them… HINT!
Eat yogurt every day. Yogurt contains acidophilus, a “good bacteria,” that makes your intestines work smoothly and helps prevent those awful stomach upsets that can ruin an otherwise great trip. Best of all, you don’t need to pack anything special to follow this tip because yogurt is an integral part of most diets across the world.
Two things I always bring with me wherever I go – whether it’s to Mom’s house for the weekend or overseas – are Emergen-C packets and ginger candies. I try to drink one of the Emergen-C things in water daily when traveling, starting with when I’m on the plane. And because I have the world’s most sensitive digestive tract, I keep a small handful of ginger candies in whatever bag I’ve got with me so I can start eating them the second I feel like my lunch isn’t agreeing with me.
I would have to say drink a lot of “beverages” and after awhile you won’t even notice you are sick!!
Does that work? hehehe
drink plenty of liquid especially water.. also don’t forget your dose of vitamin C.. no not the pills.. go for the cranberry juice, apple juice.. and even oh so yummy cherry juice!
having enough Vitamin C in your system will help you fight off the unwanted sickness that you can encounter while you’re travelling. Your Immune system will be so strong that it will want you to travel more!
I have a few tried and true health-tips for traveling. It starts on the plane. That air in germ-laden. There is a neat little personal air purifier, the Fresh Air Buddy. It works. I was not getting sick. My husband was and he was passing stuff on. He now wears one.
Two essential oils as hand sanitizers and more.
Then I use homeopathic immune-system builders.
And my friend EmergenC travels with me.
I want to enjoy that trip!!!
Hope these suggestions help.
Always make sure you pack several protein bars, a few bottled waters and vitamins! You never know when you might have an unexpected airplane delay, traffic delay, etc. Also, make sure you bring a small first aid kit with you. Pack it with things like Tylenol, Band-Aids, Neosporin, Immodium and Cold Meds. I always make sure I have some spray sanitizer with me, too, because I believe when you travel, you are more susceptible to germs – probably because you are on the go so much!
And, my last tip – the most important of all – alway prepare for the unexpected when traveling!!
Always, always wear bug repellant. Yes, the chemicals are nasty, but if the food or water doesn’t get you in some places, you can count on the bugs of doing it. I wrote a blog about avoiding Dengue Fever in Key West – the basic principles apply everywhere! Stay safe, stay healthy and stay traveling.
I think the key to staying healthy is still making sure to eat fruits & veggies while traveling. Of course I add on some delicious desserts and whatever else comes my way, but making sure I am getting the vitamins I need through fresh food is important. Also getting some exercise, even if it’s just a walk to explore the city, is always a good way to keep yourself feeling great!
When I travel I try to stay healthy in mind and body. I enjoy the freedom of travel and the thrill of getting lost. I also do my best to eat lots of fruits and veggies, but ONLY after washing them thoroughly!
Other things that I carry to help me stay health are dental floss, medical tape and rehydration salts. The salts came in handy so many times in West Africa and can even be useful after a night out at the clubs.
The only thing I do that is probably not so healthy is employ Red Bull to help me get over jet lag. If times correctly it can pick you up and let you down exactly when needed!
Travelers insurance is also a must. Really all of this won’t matter if you get sick and don’t have insurance to help you out!
Safe journeys!!!
Thanks for the comments everyone. A winner will be contacted this weekend.
